Wisdom Wednesday: Endurance in the Everyday Life.  Be the Light!       

Hello humpday! I have so much to say and yet nothing at all. So I will keep it brief with lots of pretty pictures. 🙂

Today I ran my first double digit miles since the Nashville marathon in April! And it felt so goooooood. Well, hot, sweaty, and way past my personal humidity threshold but I didn’t care. My legs were like: Just GO!

I ran through my quaint little town of Brevard. Looping a few times. (thinking I need to find a new route as the summer tourist start creeping in and cramping my sidewalk space…) The beauty of summer running is the no pressure factor. Well. for me it is personally. The heat and humidity will slow you down and it is totally more than okay to stop for a walk or catch your breathe or grab some water. So I took a brief moment to capture our infamous “jailhouse” hill that I use for hill work often. Observe:

On the way to jailhouse hill I run past our Brevard College campus. It’s one of the most beautiful campuses. I think anyway. I took a pic of the lamp because it got me to thinking… we are to be the light of the world. By we I imply we runners. Athletes. Go-getters. Motivators. And when I put myself out in the public eye I am putting myself out there ready for criticism, judgement, and/or scrutiny . But I run on anyway. I press on anyway. Because there’s someone out there who needs to see a positive light and who is ready to catch it, reel it in, and be the light.

In an attempt to boldly step out into the business owner world on my own two feet as a personal trainer, I have found that I am especially vulnerable to criticisms and judgement. People will almost always have something to say whether it be positive or negative. Some negative you can take as constructive criticism, other negative you just have to learn to toss that mess out the window. If I have the ability to change at least one person’s life, then I will have done my job. Because that is my passion. And I will not give up. It takes passion, dedication, and endurance to make a dream come true. This isn’t just a j-o-b for me. It’s a lifestyle. A true, honest, deep passion that has burned in my soul for quite some time. I want, I need people to see how incredibly beautiful and strong they are on the inside. And I believe that when you finally feel fit on the inside your outside genuinely starts to radiate goodness.

I really want to give my girl, Jenna at Jenna Leigh Photography, a HUGE shout-out. This woman. She is amazing. Not only does she capture the most beautiful photos but she treats her photography as an art. She’s not your typical point and click photographer. I am ridiculously blessed to know her. She’s responsible for my awesome running shots and our beyond perfect wedding photos. With my new pro shot I am starting to feel more official. 😉

In other less inspirationial news, the good folks over at EnduroPacks sent me a month’s supply of their product line including, a multi-vitamin, electrolyte spray, glutamine capsules for recovery, and essential amino acid patches. I am currently testing their products out so I will give y’all my ever so intriguing thoughts on the company and product about two weeks from now. When testing supplements I really think it’s super important to give it a few weeks before making any concise conclusions.  I will say that so far since using the electrolyte spray I haven’t been “bonking” too bad in the heat. My hot weather running seems to be going fairly well.

In the meantime while y’all anxiously await my review on the goods, head over to Tina Muir’s blog and read her review HERE. She’s an elite marathoner and she’s freaking fast. So I have high hopes in that this product will serve me well as it has her. I only need to shave, oh, an hour and change off my marathon time to compete with her. Maybe EnduroPacks is the key. hahahah. right.

Anyway. So that’s about it y’all! I’m a busy woman currently working on revamping my Facebook page and other social media sites trying to reconfigure everything to suite my personal training biz. But this blog will always remain my main running site. I may be busting it out in the gym and with clients, but y’all know I am runner at heart and always will be through and through!

Wisdom Wednesday: Where I’ve Been, Strawberries, and Cut the Crap.

Hey y’all! I know, it’s been way too long since I’ve hopped on the blog. Wow. Time has this magical way of slipping right through your fingers. I’m a busy woman. For those of you super human mommas who work full-time, raise kiddos, train (run, swim, bike, lift and all that), and find the time to post daily or at least weekly I say: KUDOS to you! I don’t know how you get it all in. I really struggle. And half my posts I feel are typed haphazardly, sideways, and all kinds of backwards.

But. On to the important stuff in life. Like where have I been? Racing the Tata Trot last Saturday with a finishing PR! (working on that blog post. It’s on my to-do list.), working with clients at the track, and working my tail off everywhere else.

And then there were strawberries. Out on my glorious, sunny run today all was right with the world…until about mile 5.62 when I realized that temps lately have been rising and I’m a thirsty girl when I run in heat. I have been so spoiled to run without carrying any kind of water bottle in the cooler temps, But now it’s time to revisit the old carry the water bottle or stash it somewhere routine. Before I die of a heatstroke routine. Luckily today, however, I ran past this little piece of heaven:

And even luckier, I knew the owners! I pleaded my thirsty runner case and they kindly offered me fruit and water. Post run I went back to purchase a full bucket. This is one purchase I don’t regret. If you’re in the area, these are some juicy, fresh, home-grown strawberries right on Asheville Hwy in Brevard, NC! Noshing on a strawberry reminded me of when I took an orange at the marathon and how greatly it helped me during that race.

This got me to thinking about running and nutrition. We have gels, sports drinks, and a variety of other “foods” to utilize in our training. BUT. What if, now here’s a crazy thought, I started fueling completely all natural? How would I carry fresh fruit on a run? These are some questions I’m going to experiment with and will report immediately to my fans er, um blog readers.

A few other random thoughts

Low Cut Arch Support Socks

Have you heard of Kushyfoot? As a distance runner having comfy socks on my feet at work and on the run are high priority. And it feels like I rotate socks more than I brush my teeth. Okay, exaggerating a little but you catch my drift. So the kind folks of Kushyfoot generously offered to send me some samples! I can not wait to try em on and give you guys the 411.

And a last random little thought I found this short article via FitFluential8 Habits of Highly Fit People

The one habit that really, really stuck out to me was cutting the crap. But aside from cutting the food and beverage crap I believe it’s imperative that we cut the non-essential “life crap” out as well. For example:

  • Cut out the crappy inner voices that tell you, you are not good enough. You are. More than just good enough even.
  • Cut out extra crappy distractions. Like the social media time sucker. Make a time/date with social media. Keep it. Then let it go and turn on REAL LIFE.
  • Cut out all the extra “extras” in life that cause you stress. Yes, extra volunteer work is noble and great. BUT volunteering at many and/or over extending your social gatherings can be overly stressful. Pick a handful charities, clubs, and/or organizations to  be a part of then cut out the rest. In doing so you will become more highly effective in your current work.

There’s just a little wisdom for your day. If you’re not signed up with FitFluential I highly recommend doing so. I get tons of healthy recipes, fitness tips, and cool articles. Like the one above.

Wisdom Wednesday: The Best is Yet to Come 

#Spring #running !! making wishes along the way…

I’m a girl with BIG goals, dreams, and ambitions. And I believe that the very best of me is yet to come. And I think that YOU should believe that about yourself no matter your age, place, or current position in life. As we get older we tend to think that our “shelf life” is becoming stale or expired. But I truly believe that we can only become better versions of ourselves if we press on each and every day to get the best out of ourselves. Don’t let age, failures, set backs, or other negative distractions stop you from pressing on. With each stage of life comes new challenges and successes. My marathon success most likely will not be the highlight of my 40’s or 50’s but rather other things will become the best of me. Like what, I’m not sure yet. But I do know that ready or not, life is going by and I better be ready to hold on tight! However, in the meantime, I read somewhere that women tend to fully peak at their marathon racing ability in their late 20’s, early 30’s. I’m 29 and been running for roughly 3.5 years. So I feel like the best of me in running the marathon distance is still out there. I’m still going to run that BQ. Bring it.

So like I mentioned yesterday, I have already created a game plan post Country Music marathon. Because without a few goals I am lost. So very lost wondering around aimlessly and I’m already too blonde to be wondering around aimlessly as is, so it’s better to have a game plan lined up.

Summer/Fall Goals:

  1. Journal offline with training. I’ve been logging all my runs/workouts on DailyMile but as I’m trying to re-focus my life and reduce stress I feel it’s best to get off one or more social media sites. And I think this is one that can go. I’ll be training but it’ll be top secret. 😉 This is something I feel like the Lord has led to me let go of.
  2. I’ll be taking the summer off strict training and focus heavily on core strength and yoga.
  3. Test my mile, 5/10k, and half-marathon time
    1. 5k is lined up for May 9th at the Tata Trot in Rosman, NC Find the race on FACEBOOK. This course is notorious for a solid 5k PR
    2. Half-marathon is lined up for June 6th at the Asheville Half in Asheville, NC I ran this race a few years back untrained and just for the fun of it. But I have yet to actually attempt to race a half-marathon. yes. that’s right. I’ve run FOUR FULL marathons and only half halfheartedly ran a half. once.
    3. 10k is lined up for July 4th at the Firecracker Run in Brevard, NC This course has been known to crush me because I don’t do well in heat or humidity. But I am determined to race it strong this year.

      I was all like, “omg I’m NEVEEERRRR running 26.2 miles again.” Then after “MUST DOMINATE AND CONQUER MARATHON NEXT TIME!!!” 

      So naturally you know I’m ready to sign up for my next marathon….

    4. And the full marathon is set for the Rock n’ Roll Savanna November 8th. I loved Savanna so much and regret that I was totally untrained for the race last year. This year I’ve proven to myself that by training hard I can knock off 18 minutes on a tough course. So I’m feeling strongly that I can knock off some more time on a flatter course with cooler weather. I do believe the hubby and bro-in-law have agreed to run this as their first full marathon too…
  4. Creating my own marathon plan. In the past I’ve always strictly followed a pre-set plan. And they have worked. But this last time I just kept feeling like I could push more. So I’m going to tweak what I’ve been currently using to fit my own body and schedule.
  5. Focus on the blog a little more. I’m not the best at blogging. nope. But I love the running/blogging community.
  6. Work on creating more personal training routines for clients. This takes T-I-M-E.
  7. Focusing on nutrition… as I mentioned on Facebook I have a problem:

So I bought this Runner’s World book on a whim since I found it on sale at our local bookstore. I feel like if I could learn to really manage what the heck I’m putting in my body then maybe my body would respond naturally by picking up in speed and strength. But who really knows. I’ve read where some elites have been known to carb load on donuts.

5 Spring Favs, OOFOS Recovery Footwear, + a Miracle

Spriiiiiiiing! Yes! It’s here! And our weather has been shaping up nicely. I think the winter weather is behind us. This is how I feel about it: RUN. Running in the spring is like a breathe of fresh freedom air. We work hard all winter to enjoy the fruits of our labor. 

Soooooo… I know it’s Saturday Sunday….but y’all probably know how I operate by now… So here’s Friday’s post plus today funzies. 

I’m always excited about the Friday Five link-up hosted by CourtneyCynthia, and Mar. I just have a hard time apparently posting on Friday… Check out their rules and future topics HERE! The BEST way to meet new fabulous bloggers and give you a blog prompt should you find yourself at a write’s block. 

Today’s Friday’s topic is one we have all been anxiously waiting for, Spring!! Good-bye snow, hello pollen! 

Spring is no doubt a beautiful time of year with flowers blooming and gardens flourishing…however all this can really aggravate allergies and asthma symptoms in turn making breathing while running a bit more difficult. Remember, your body needs roughly two weeks of running outdoors to acclimate to any new climate changes. So give yourself the time your body needs. For additional tips and reading check out PopSugar’s article HERE and Active tips HERE.

Aside from that bit, here are five things I look forward to in spring, especially this spring! 

1.) The kid’s birthday! He will be the big 10! Time flies…

ahhhh. my pride and joy. What a face!!

2.) my husband and I celebrate our first hiking date in May! It will be two years. ❤

3.) Hiking! Waterfalls! Trail running! Picnics! Basically just being outdoors.

4.) Races! Brevard Rotary hosts a White Squirrel 5/10k and kid’s fun run. Come visit us in May.  You will not regret visiting Brevard!

This year we all know I have the Rock n’Roll Country Music Marathon benefiting St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Nashville marathon lined up in April! From the St. Jude’s website:

I’m hoping and training hard for a solid Boston Qualifying time. I need to run a 3:35:00. I feel like I’ve been putting in all the work I can. But it’s still a daunting and scary task..The closer we get to race day the more I question myself. Can I really pull off an 8:12 min/mile for 26.2 miles??

5.) Last but not least, new beginnings. Easter. Spring is a time of new chances. Fresh starts after a long cold winter.

Winter is always hard for me…but 11 weeks into marathon training feels harder. I’m so grateful for all the positive bloggers who remind me to press on. Like Jen over at Jen Choses Joy posted about no grit, no pearl. Seriously, go read her post here. Her humor and optimism will keep you motivated. Thanks Jen!

Okay so for the fun part of today’s post: OOFOS! Have you heard of this recovery shoe footwear? My hubby and I went downtown for a little shoe shopping. I originally went in for a new pair of Mizunos but found these:

We found them here Sports Spot in Brevard. The owners are super cool and they hands down beat anyone in price!

 I definitely felt the “oo” after my 22 miler even if I looked like ew.

Salty, sweaty, and done.

I only have one more monster run left in this training cycle!! woohoo!

I plan on a more thorough review on the shoe next week aiming for a Tips and Tricks on rest and recovery post for Tuesday.

One last positive note: This past Saturday I was playing around with the idea of not running long. I just didn’t feel like it. I was exhausted. But as I strapped up and went on I kept thinking about my IRun4 buddy…I prayed for him and his family. He’s been in the hospital since December. So I prayed if there was any was that my running 20 miles would get him out of the hospital and home I would run it. So I ran it. I realize in no logical way my act of physically running could rescue him but if I knew it could, then I would run it in a heartbeat. So I pushed through and just kept running.

And you know what?

That very same day he was sent HOME!!! It was a miracle in my eyes. If you don’t run for #IRun4 I strongly suggest you sign up. Your life will be forever changed.
