A New Kind of #MotivateMe Monday. Goal: No Goals!

Hellllllllooooo Monday!! I’m so happy you’re here. What?! Yes. I am. Because, it’s a new week. A fresh start. And I just got back from the gym so I’m feeling all kinds of pumped positivism going on. And after much thought about the race this past weekend, I’ve decided that I’m ridiculous and that I should totally celebrate a new PR…

So to celebrate a shiny new PR (in every distance even this year 5k, 10k, 10 miler, marathon!!) I splurged on some new running duds. Positive mindset is back in full force friends!! Sometimes you need to sulk for 24 hours or so then you’re recharged and realize how silly you’ve been. We are HUMAN. not machines.

Getting to spend time with this kid helps remind me what truly matters most in life:

And like cheeseburgers and wine. But seriously this stuff was yum! I was like whaaaat? Cheeseburgers are my favorite thing and now there’s a wine for that?! I found it at our local shop in town, Broad Street Wines. I don’t drink a lot or even very often but a nice glass of red after a hard race was pleasant.

then there was wine…cheeseburger wine.

And like our garden’s fresh blooms. I love, love, love flowers!! God’s creation is pretty much perfect. and we are blessed. so stop and smell the flowers y’all. It’s just good for the soul.

Allow life’s beauty to encompass you. Draw you in. And forget the troubles.

So as far as this week’s line-up for miles, I have zero goals. I don’t care if I run 60  miles or 0 miles this week. I just want to enjoy life as it comes at me. With no worries. No stresses. No preconceived ideas of how life should run.

Goals are important. In fact I strongly recommend having goals, setting them, and smashing them to completion. Goals give us that motivation and boost we need to get things done. On the flip side we can become so dependent on meeting or crippled when not meeting goals that we forget to take life as is. It’s nice to cruise through life one in a while. Allow the scene to take you in where it wants you. In two weeks I will be back at marathon training and giving it all I have. Because I want to qualify for Boston darn it!! But before I get back to serious training or goals I need to be seriously healthy on the inside. That’s a huge part of my personal training regime, making sure women feel secure on the inside!

So here it is, NO MORE negative talk. No more “I’m not good enough” garbage. Just because I’m not an Olympian, elite, pro, or even first place finisher doesn’t mean I’m not great in my own right.

I started running when I was 25. I was that girl who hated running. And now look where I’ve brought myself. I’ve come a long way, baby. And for this, I celebrate! And YOU should celebrate YOU. No matter where you are currently in life. You can only move forward once you’ve accepted where you are currently and have a healthy mindset to tackle life’s challenges.

#MotivateMe Monday Fat Legs, 31 miles, and Summer Goals

What prompted this post was a recent conversation held between a fellow professional peer and I. We were discussing body image and they told me I had “big” legs. 

Really?! The last thing you want to tell a woman is that she is big. Anywhere. Maybe they meant for it to be a compliment as I am a marathoner and we typically have muscular legs. I prefer the term thoroughbred horse powered. But I couldn’t help but look down and suddenly see my lower limbs as fat stubs, I’m short. Not long and lean. It’s amazing how others’ words can affect you…if you give them meaning. 

  
We women can be terribly harsh with ourselves.  Some people have this idea that we runners are all 8 feet tall, 0.05% body fat, and zero boobs. 

Well, they got the boob thing right with me. TMI? Sorry. It’s still kinda a personal runners blog. Chuckle at it. It’s okay. 

But runners run in ALL sizes and body types. 

I’m short and kinda squatty. But it’s cool cause I’m closer to the ground. So less ways to fall when I trip. HA.

 But aside from that short ramble last week’s #MotivateMe didn’t quite end well. Life was just….busy. I worked overtime, training clients, the kid had camp to get ready and off to, I have a husband I should acknowledge one in a while lol… You know the drill. I made it 31 miles. Not quite 40. But 31 is still more than 0!!! And instead of solely focusing on mileage I have other things to enjoy…

I wanted to check in with summer. It’sofficially  heat wave season!!  Working that golden runners tan. 

Summer Goals

  1. Sub -45 10k July 4th without passing out.  
  2. Hit 40+ miles weekly, end of June. This still needs to happen to prep for marathon training. 
  3. Enjoy Running as a gift. 
  4. Go on a long 10+ mile trail run. 
  5. Go to the pool. Last year we had access and never went. Really?!?! Yeah, that’s gotta change. 
  6. Read a book. A whole. Entire. Book. Maybe. Who has time to read? But it sounds like such a good goal. 
  7. Get together with my girlfriends! Haven’t done this since the wedding. 
  8. See my new clients reach their goals!
  9. Blog more than once a week. Ha. Admirable goal. 
  10. Just practice joy on a daily basis. 

Weekly Workout line-up 

Monday: 30 minutes XT + upper body strength routine. 

Tuesday: easy 6 with 4 x 800s

Wednesday: easy 5 + yoga

Thursday: 8 tempo 

Friday: easy 5 + 30 mins XT + lower body stability workout. 

Saturday: easy 4 or rest

Sunday: 12 long slow miles 

Total miles: 40 let’s try again…

#WisdomWednesday Choose To Be POWERFUL, Not Pitiful + Ladder Workouts

Hello Wednesday! Monday has come and gone, Tuesday skipped by, and now we are lookin’ at you humpday! How. In. The. World?! I haven’t posted much in a while but I have been super hard at work that I just didn’t feel as though I should post some haphazard post just to post. So without further adieu I give you my snippet of wisdom for the day:

Choose to be POWERFUL. Not pitiful.

We all have that choice in life. To tackle life’s little annoyances with positive or negative ‘tudes. Recently after having a rough round last week mentally and physically I’ve been forced to ask myself what is worth keeping current in my life? Why am I feeling so pitiful? Have I been putting too much pressure on myself? Piled too much on my plate? Where can I back off? What do I want in life most? Like really, really, really want? Where am I willing to sacrifice?

I believe when we overstimulate ourselves with too much activity in our everyday lives it can cause us to feel pitiful. Forcing us to feel like failures because we simply can’t do it all or do it all well.

The solution?

Choose what’s most important to you in your life and give it all you got.

Like loving your family.

Training for an important race.

Running your own business.

Whatever it is choose to live powerfully in those areas. I think all the other little things can slide like being on every. single. social. media. outlet. That in itself is enough to make anyone feel totally inadequate when it comes to keeping up with the Jones!

So. On another note, guess how many miles I ran last week?! LESS THAN 15. Let me tell ya, I was soooo not feeling powerful last week y’all.

Wait….what?! Jess? The little happy running freak? Well. I am not sure entirely what went down last week other than the fact that my training journal reads waaaaay too m any rest days. But looking at it with a different perspective I think it’s just what my body needed. I think in all my excitement I may have forgotten that I’ve run a marathon less than two months ago and in less than two months will be putting myself back into the rigors of marathon training. Oh, and still working full-time in the pharmacy while trying to start my own personal training business..  that’s a lot folks. Maybe a total slacker week was needed.

But this week I’m back at it and feeling more like myself again. I ran an abridged ladder workout on Tuesday to ease myself back into speed work in an effort to tune-up for the 10k in July. I like ladders because they keep the workout fresh, varied, and they fly by quickly.

Here’s what it looked like for me:

one mile warm-up easy pace

1200m @ 5k race pace

400m Rest Interval (walk/slow jog)

800m @ 10 sec faster than 5k RP

400m RI

400m @ 30 sec faster than 5k RP

400 RI

Then I ran it backwards back up the ladder.

One mile cool down

This is a shorter version of the ladders I will use during marathon training. During my last marathon training I didn’t run any ladders, only a handful of YASSO 800s and mile repeats. Which are good workouts but it’s best to keep things mixed up in training to keep pushing your body. The benefit in the ladder workout is that is teaches your legs to run faster while fatigued from running fast.

And like the ladder workout as in life, you will go up and you will go down, but the key here is to keep on truckin’.

#MotivateMe Monday Stay The Path

Happy Monday! I know you must be thinking happyMonday? Really?! Who likes Mondays?!

YES! I am saying happy Monday because each Monday means a fresh new start of opportunists. Monday doesn’t have to be the drudgery of the week. Perspective my friends! Now ask me next week before I’ve had three cups of coffee and I might give you another perspective…

So onward to some motivational, inspirational stuff. As being a part of the FitFluential family I receive emails with tons of motivating articles, recipes, workouts, and such. And I uaually just skimp through the articles, but when I read this one I knew I had to share with my readers: Stay the path.

My take away from the article:

No matter how challenging your path becomes stay the path. Remain focused. March on with relentless determination. Often our greatest successes come out of our greatest struggles.

It may take time to see noticeable results but the time will pass anyway so stick with it! This is something I am preaching to myself daily. As I continue to work daily on my personal training career there have been moments where I begin to doubt myself. Then I remember, it’s only been two months! Give yourself some time woman! I’m one of those who wants everything done right now!! It takes roughly four months to train well for a marathon. It takes nine months to prepare a baby for birth. I’ve heard it takes roughly five years to see a new small business really prosper. So why in the world would I expect to see instant results? Life in itself is not instant. It’s a journey. And that’s one thing the marathon has taught me.

Speaking of marathons….

So how’s my mileage? Still super low and creeping back up very slowly. I’m not a running animal who can knock out 50+ miles a week without injury. My body needs time.  I’ve had some great runs here and there including a few fast 10 milers which is a total confidence boost. Since in previous #MotivateMe and #MarathonMonday posts worked so well to keep myself accountable I’m going back to that on Mondays. I hope that’s cool with my readers! I have been diligent with my new Believe journal. It’s kind of hard not to be diligent with it because it’s like my own personal motivation wrapped up in shiny red leather. I don’t miss DailyMile too much since going back to paper and pen…

Mileage goals for this week:

Monday: Rest

Tuesday: XT/upper body workout routine

Wednesday: 10 miles + yoga

Thursday: 8 miles

Friday: 4 miles/core work

Saturday: 10 miles

Sunday: 5 miles/stretching

Total miles: 37

It doesn’t look like much but between pharmacy full-time, personal training, family, home…trust me. It’s plenty for me! That’s one other point I would like to make: continue to be the BEST version of you! Do what you can, when you can. STOP comparing to others’ training when they may have different circumstances than you. YOU ARE ENOUGH! AND YOU ARE BEAUTIFULLY STRONG.

say hello to my new secret weapon.

Hello Thursday! I have a lot going on today so this is just a brief post to introduce you to my new secret weapon. Except I guess it’s not really a secret if I’m displaying it out for you to see…but you’ll never see the inside {insert wicked up to no good chuckle here}.  I found the perfect running log/journal for my next adventure(s) in life thanks to Vita Trains 4 Life who blogged about this fancy little leather bound journal. ((You should check Vita out. Her writing is witty, humorous, and inspiring!)) Created by elite athlete women Lauren Fleshman and Roisin McGettigan-Dumas it’s chalk full of inspirational words of wisdom. I love the layout of the book as it allows freedom to write, doodle, plan, and think out loud however I see fit. The journal also introduced me to Fleshman’s Blog where she answers Questions of the day.

In other news, on Instagram I was tagged to write five reasons why I run and I thought I’d share with y’all #5reasonirun since I’m all into goal setting and new dreams with my journal. It’s always a good idea to revisit the why behind the goal(s).
