Sleepy Sunday, Self-Doubt, and Why I’m Not Racing…Right Now

be strong in the Lord. more race days will come! trash self-doubt and trust that He has made you strong and beautiful!

I absolutely revel in race day mornings. The excitement, free bananas, cool tees, the people, nerves, energy, the unknown, the run. And yesterday morning in my quiet little town they hosted the White Squirrel 5/10k hosted by Brevard Rotary which I have run a time or two in the past and have enjoyed the races. But I’m not racing this year. Here’s why:

  • as many of you know racing tends to get expensive. So I’ve been very picky and choosey about which distances and which races I’ll be running.
  • There’s that and I’ve run a marathon and a fast 5k all within four weeks of each other.
  •  I’m trying my hardest to focus on the easier runs and strength work.
  • Plus, most elite runners race only a handful of events anyway. There’s a very good reason for that. If you want to give your best at your goal race you must give your body the rest it needs. Not just a day or two either.
  • I want to be at my peak come marathon day in November. And that means ample rest to be ready to push hard when the time is right.
  • Racing too often, too much, too long stresses your body and increases risk of injury.

So what did I do with my Saturday? Well, at 8:00 I met with Jenna at Jenna Leigh Photography ((She is an incredibly talented photographer and I am sooooo freaking lucky to know her. If you’re in Western NC I can not highly recommend her more!!)) for a quick head shot for my Personal Trainer biz, which is a work in progress; check it out HERE so far to see where I am going with it. It’s definitely a work in progress!  We had fun this morning with some quick shots and overdue girl, fitness, mommy chat. Need more of that….

jenna aka best photographer ever

Then right after that I took off on a run to wallow in self pity about not racing clear my mind of a few stresses. I’d be a liar if I told you I totally didn’t run past the race event and whine in jealousy inside my mind a weeeee bit.  I’ve not been feeling my strongest lately mentally. I believe we A-type go getters tend to put too much pressure to be perfect in everything. I’ve come a long ways in growing and becoming okay with relaxing that idea some. But sometimes, every once in a while life just gets to me. Maybe it’s been my current pharmacy job getting me down, or the fact that I’m tirelessly trying to create a personal training biz that seems to be taking too long to lift off, or maybe it’s too much self-doubt. You gotta tell that ish to shut it up. Because ain’t no body got time for that mess. You are stronger than you think. And The Good Lord is even stronger.  Any good biz owner I’m sure will tell you it takes an insane amount of initial ground breaking work and lots of dedicated T-I-M-E to really get the ball rolling. Especially if you’re currently working a full-time job outside of the home. But in the long run it will all be worth it. The long runs always are.

i don’t always wear makeup when i run but when i do i take a selfie. lol i am no running diva i swear but post photo shoot i wanted to run!

As a fitness professional I am not exempt from feelings of insecurities and today proved that. When trying to pose for the camera I kept hearing those nasty little self-doubt bugs creep in trying to tell me lies. Like your teeth are crooked. Don’t smile. You’re not fit enough yet. Blah blah blah

You know what to tell those bugs: liar liar pants on fire! I may be a work in progress but I am strong and I am beautiful still!!!!

And on a more personal life note the husband and I are celebrating two years of togetherness this weekend! We went on our first date, a hike and ice-cream, two years ago during Memorial Day Weekend. This weekend we celebrated with cruising the town festival eating ridiculous amounts of tasty oh-so-bad-for-you food!

So that’s my weekend in a nutshell. I press on. Follow your heart. Never give up and tell those nasty bugs to shut it up!

I’m working all Sunday then group run Sunday eve!

What’s on your plate this weekend? How often do you race?

Thoughts for Thursday: BELIEVE Journal and Why

believejournal

say hello to my new secret weapon.

Hello Thursday! I have a lot going on today so this is just a brief post to introduce you to my new secret weapon. Except I guess it’s not really a secret if I’m displaying it out for you to see…but you’ll never see the inside {insert wicked up to no good chuckle here}.  I found the perfect running log/journal for my next adventure(s) in life thanks to Vita Trains 4 Life who blogged about this fancy little leather bound journal. ((You should check Vita out. Her writing is witty, humorous, and inspiring!)) Created by elite athlete women Lauren Fleshman and Roisin McGettigan-Dumas it’s chalk full of inspirational words of wisdom. I love the layout of the book as it allows freedom to write, doodle, plan, and think out loud however I see fit. The journal also introduced me to Fleshman’s Blog where she answers Questions of the day.

In other news, on Instagram I was tagged to write five reasons why I run and I thought I’d share with y’all #5reasonirun since I’m all into goal setting and new dreams with my journal. It’s always a good idea to revisit the why behind the goal(s).

photo (6)

post marathon swollen face. mmm. photo I chose for #5reasonsIrun

  1. Running is my freedom
  2. it makes me feel strong inside and out
  3. it’s brought me new friendships that otherwise wouldn’t exist
  4. it’s goal setting, achieving kind thing–always striving to be a better version of myself
  5. I like to eat bacon cheeseburgers. a lot.

So this is my official farewell and break-up with DailyMile. Bring on the new goals and BIGGER dreams!!

That’s all I got y’all!

Do you keep a hand written journal? What are some reasons you run? Do you re-check and re-set your goals throughout the year? What’s on your summer to-do list?

blessed and beautiful running.

Making a Difference Link-Up With Miles-to-Go & NUUN GIVEAWAY!!

Miles To Go Y’all!!! I’m way excited once again to be joining Kelly over at Miles-to-Go for her making a difference link-up! Why? Because there’a giveaway here!! But first…

This is a once monthly event held on Wednesdays about giving back through running or anything fitness related. I had so many things to blog about last time, here, when it comes to giving back so I decided to break it down into four parts. I touched on the topics you can expect from me in the upcoming months last post so today I’m going to start with St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital fundraising in honor of the marathon coming up in 10 days!!!!  I had set a personal goal to raise $500.00 and I’m only $75 shy of that.

Why am I so personally passionate about raising funds for St.Jude’s hospital??

  • Children are a precious gift
  • Medical care is outrageously expensive
  • Cancer sucks and it’s unfair that it attacks the lives of anyone, especially little lives
  • It reminds me to appreciate my own child and his health
  • Fund raising for others teaches my son to be grateful for his moving, strong, healthy body and what it means to give back
  • You never know when YOU may need the help someday
  • We can feel helpless in situations like cancer but giving back helps us feel like we have done something.
  • I may not be a doctor and so I can not help those who are ill in that respect, but I can RUN & support those who do have the skills to help heal! We can all play a part in this life to help others. Do what you can, where you are!

These supplies help parents and nurses care for babies in treatment and include items like diapers, baby bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, footies and heel warmers.

Wagon: $70

Wagons can make traveling through the halls of St. Jude easier for parents and more fun for a young child.

Parties to celebrate birthdays, holidays and “coming off chemo”: $75

St. Jude provides parties, decorations, cakes and more to keep spirits high during the holidays and to celebrate special occasions like birthdays and a child’s completion of chemotherapy treatment.

If this isn’t enough to make you want to support St. Jude maybe this will,

And lastly….If that still isn’t enough to encourage you to give I have devised a challenge & GIVEAWAY for you: Since I am running the Country Music Rock n’ Roll Marathon next Saturday, I am offering YOU the chance to guess my finishing marathon time! Whoever comes closest WINS a free tube of NUUN.

#MarathonMonday It’s Taaaaaaaaper Time With CheriBundi

First off, Happy Monday! I know I haven’t posted in for-freaking-ever but life has gotten intensely busier with my attempt at personal training ON TOP of working full-time in the pharmacy. Type A or crazy… either way I’m doing my best to get after it every day. Although I fail often with ‘tude at home. You can only handle so much stress before you go cra cra. Lots of meditation and prayer helps…oh and bubble baths. yes ma’am.

Anyway, we had our first ladies group run this past Sunday. I would say it was a success. I mean, just look at these beauties! Hoping for more ladies next weekend. We all have different goals and ambitions but the thing that ties us together is determination to be the best version of ourselves! Running with friends is motivation in itself I think. I’m excited and hopeful about how Flying Feet Ladies Group will grow in the future!

So….anyway. About that marathon I’m running in two weeks…here’s kinda what’s going through my mind:

Have I done enough? Did I run hard enough? Often enough? Fast enough? Long enough?

I think most marathoners ask themselves these questions about this time.

Taper time. Crazy in the head time.

Since my thoughts are flying like rockets ships on crack in my head I’ll simply list what I’m feeling. I like lists. They help me organize my crackish thoughts.

What I’m thinking:

I’m too slow to BQ

I’m fast! Like lightening baby. I got this!

Ugh. That 22 miler two weeks ago though… If I run like that … I’m DOOMED.

I’m a freaking rockstar!

I’m fat. I’ve been eating way too much. I definitely gained 5 pounds while training.

Pizza. Is. So. Delish.

My husband will divorce me if I don’t stop acting like a freak.

How I’m feeling physically:

Strong

Fat

Fit

Bloated

No pain or aches to speak of!!

How I’m tapering:

Cutting mileage

Eating cleaner: I LOVE smoothies with CheriBundi! And I recently found it at a Walmart Super Center!! Win. Tart Cherry Juice is the best anti-inflammatory. I haven’t had to take ANY kind of pain reliever during this marathon training as long as I have a bit of cherry juice daily. I even got my hubby hooked on it.

Best recovery smoothie!

Resting more.

Focusing on balance, core work, and light weights.

I’ve kind of been making up my own workouts even though I’ve followed the same plan religiously for 14 weeks…

So what’s on tap this week:

Monday: XT + weights

Tuesday: REST

Wednesday: 8 miles w6 @ MP + yoga

Thursday: 4 easy w/4 strides

Friday: 7 hills

Saturday: 10 LSD

Sunday: easy 4 or rest/yoga

total mileage doesn’t matter too much now.

It’s marathon prep time.

How’s your training going? Do you run with a group? Are you crazy Type A or calm, cool, and collect Type B? Do you like CheriBundi? You should!

blessed and beautiful running.

The Marathoner in Me Craves Boston: Goals

Okay, I realize that Boston was so last month, however…
It’s no secret, I LOVE the marathon and all that the distance entails.

Me at my happiest run, OKC 26.2

And if you’re a marathon fanatic you probably dream of Boston too. It’s a runner’s Mecca.¬†
I more than likely could not afford a trip or race fee for Boston but just knowing I qualified with my time would totally rock.
To qualify I must run a 3:35:00. Ouch.

Which means I have to run a 8:12min/mi for 26.2 miles. Whhhaaaat!? Yes. Can it be done? Of course it can.

Right know I’m training working¬†towards kicking my 5k time’s butt and score a PR. If I can do that, then I will sign up for my next marathon. That’s the deal I have made with myself. Set goals, plan rewards, and accomplish mission. In theory anyway. According to a Runner’s World race pace predictor calculator, I should be able to run a 22:25 (7:13 min/mi) 5k if I could run a 3:35:00 marathon. So my first goal is to get under 23:30 for the 5k round one, then hopefully train and get that 22:25. I have two chances this month to score a sub-23 5k race. My fastest road test is 24:04. That was nearly two years ago! I know many of you speedsters may scoff at this, but shoot, that’s fast for me! I haven’t worked on speed in a long time. Last two years I was busy with distance, not speed. According to¬†one of our local coaches and race directors, he¬†suggested¬†focusing on the¬†5k first, knock that one out of the park, then continue up to 10k, half, then full.¬†Which makes total sense, but I am so impatient and wanted to run a fast 26.2, like yesterday. I’ve ran all those distances, but never focused or trained¬†solely on those except for the marathon. So¬†for now I’ve just been doing strength training once a week, some kind of speed session, yoga, tempo run, and a long run.¬†Currently I’m up to 11 miles for the long run. The last long run was pretty amazing too! Speaking of miles, how do you keep track of yours? Or do you? I like to use DailyMile.¬†I’m completely lazy about writing¬†and adding my miles so I like how this site calculates everything for me.¬†It also helps to look back through training to see what worked and what didn’t as far as shoes, food, drink, etc.

So. If I meet my 5k time goal…as far as 26.2 choices, I’m playing around with the Rock n’ Roll Marathon in Savanna, Georgia. I’m considering¬†this race because it’s a little closer to home, timing and date¬†is fair in that it’s about three weeks post wedding…which is taper time so while I’m getting all married and stuff I won’t be sweating over hard core training, one of our SMART Girls coaches is running it, and my fianc√© likes music so I figured he would enjoy this event with me.¬†

Follow me on my quest.
First order of business? Conquer a fast 5k.

Let’s rock n’ roll yo.¬†
***So tell me, which marathons have the best courses for a stellar PR? Any marathons coming your way?***
***Happy (& Blessed) Running!***
