Sleepy Sunday, Self-Doubt, and Why I’m Not Racing…Right Now

be strong in the Lord. more race days will come! trash self-doubt and trust that He has made you strong and beautiful!

I absolutely revel in race day mornings. The excitement, free bananas, cool tees, the people, nerves, energy, the unknown, the run. And yesterday morning in my quiet little town they hosted the White Squirrel 5/10k hosted by Brevard Rotary which I have run a time or two in the past and have enjoyed the races. But I’m not racing this year. Here’s why:

  • as many of you know racing tends to get expensive. So I’ve been very picky and choosey about which distances and which races I’ll be running.
  • There’s that and I’ve run a marathon and a fast 5k all within four weeks of each other.
  •  I’m trying my hardest to focus on the easier runs and strength work.
  • Plus, most elite runners race only a handful of events anyway. There’s a very good reason for that. If you want to give your best at your goal race you must give your body the rest it needs. Not just a day or two either.
  • I want to be at my peak come marathon day in November. And that means ample rest to be ready to push hard when the time is right.
  • Racing too often, too much, too long stresses your body and increases risk of injury.

So what did I do with my Saturday? Well, at 8:00 I met with Jenna at Jenna Leigh Photography ((She is an incredibly talented photographer and I am sooooo freaking lucky to know her. If you’re in Western NC I can not highly recommend her more!!)) for a quick head shot for my Personal Trainer biz, which is a work in progress; check it out HERE so far to see where I am going with it. It’s definitely a work in progress!  We had fun this morning with some quick shots and overdue girl, fitness, mommy chat. Need more of that….

jenna aka best photographer ever

Then right after that I took off on a run to wallow in self pity about not racing clear my mind of a few stresses. I’d be a liar if I told you I totally didn’t run past the race event and whine in jealousy inside my mind a weeeee bit.  I’ve not been feeling my strongest lately mentally. I believe we A-type go getters tend to put too much pressure to be perfect in everything. I’ve come a long ways in growing and becoming okay with relaxing that idea some. But sometimes, every once in a while life just gets to me. Maybe it’s been my current pharmacy job getting me down, or the fact that I’m tirelessly trying to create a personal training biz that seems to be taking too long to lift off, or maybe it’s too much self-doubt. You gotta tell that ish to shut it up. Because ain’t no body got time for that mess. You are stronger than you think. And The Good Lord is even stronger.  Any good biz owner I’m sure will tell you it takes an insane amount of initial ground breaking work and lots of dedicated T-I-M-E to really get the ball rolling. Especially if you’re currently working a full-time job outside of the home. But in the long run it will all be worth it. The long runs always are.

i don’t always wear makeup when i run but when i do i take a selfie. lol i am no running diva i swear but post photo shoot i wanted to run!

As a fitness professional I am not exempt from feelings of insecurities and today proved that. When trying to pose for the camera I kept hearing those nasty little self-doubt bugs creep in trying to tell me lies. Like your teeth are crooked. Don’t smile. You’re not fit enough yet. Blah blah blah

You know what to tell those bugs: liar liar pants on fire! I may be a work in progress but I am strong and I am beautiful still!!!!

And on a more personal life note the husband and I are celebrating two years of togetherness this weekend! We went on our first date, a hike and ice-cream, two years ago during Memorial Day Weekend. This weekend we celebrated with cruising the town festival eating ridiculous amounts of tasty oh-so-bad-for-you food!

So that’s my weekend in a nutshell. I press on. Follow your heart. Never give up and tell those nasty bugs to shut it up!

I’m working all Sunday then group run Sunday eve!

What’s on your plate this weekend? How often do you race?

Wisdom Wednesday: Rear view Mirror Runner…Only for Checking.

We have rear view mirrors on our vehicles to briefly check behind us for any oncoming traffic, human beings wondering around aimlessly, and/or other things that might be obstructing our path. And this is a beautiful parallel for life. Often times our past failures seem bigger than what they really are…as with the rear view mirrors… Our past is only meant for a brief check. Not to gaze behind long in regret, or could haves or should haves…

Go ahead and check your past.

observe what went wrong; what went right.

review what needs to change, if anything.

pause for a moment to allow things to pass or move out of your way so you’re not plowing ahead or behind and running people or ideas over without care.

but what ever you do, do not stay stuck.

because who you are today is not who you were yesterday, but you wouldn’t be who you are TODAY if it wasn’t for yesterday….did I lose you?

I am not who I was yesterday. Thank the LORD!

we are constantly learning. growing. shaping.

don’t let past failures shape your future. rather, allow lessons learned grow you.

This is also a practical application for your physical training, like marathon training. I like to review past workouts to see what worked and what didn’t. But I refuse to dwell on where I goofed for too long. Instead, I press forward to find new ways to work on my training. One method didn’t work. Oh well. We move on.

#presson

pssst..please review THIS past post briefly to WIN NUUN! Thanks, y’all are the best.

How often do you check your “rear view mirror” in life? Do you keep a running or fitness log to review?

blessed and beautiful running.

#WisdomWednesday: Discipline. Yuck.

I’m just going to lay it out straight, I do not like discipline. At. All. Nope.
I have a hard time with being ‘wrong’. I hate being told ‘no’. Especially when I have to tell myself no. ‘No, Jessica. You do NOT need a 50th piece of chocolate.’ And sometimes my own personal discipline lacks. ‘Oh, I’ll get around to it [laundry, dishes, writing out thank you cards, you name it] later.’ … Like 20 years later.
But supposedly it’s [discipline] good for us.
It refines us. Makes us better. What would happen if we were never disciplined? We wouldn’t grow. We would become stagnant or even worse. It’s so necessary to welcome discipline.
So, what about self discipline? Are we able to push ourselves daily to complete needed tasks?
“You have to learn how to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.” ~ Lou Piniella
I know there’s many days (including, like, right now) where I’m sitting on my butt when I should be studying, running, doing laundry…but blogging about discipline is more important than actually following thru. Right?!
I kid. I kid.
Well…I’ve disciplined myself to drink coffee every morning, religiously. Ha!
It takes serious discipline to achieve goals and dreams. When we look at elite athletes, folks with doctorates, coaches, star musicians, or any other ‘great’, or even the mom with a quiver full of kiddos, we see great accomplishments that come from…slacking off and sitting around. No. From daily discipline. Hard work. Persistence.
It starts with small steps and then you press on daily. Over and over again. Even if your goal is not to become “a great”, you should strive to be the greatest you, you can be.
I want to BQ more than I want to be lazy

One way we can practice self discipline is join in a challenge to help keep you motivated.
Currently I’m participating in the Runners World run streak #RWRunStreak where I must run at least one mile daily. Do you think run streaking is good for your body? Thoughts?
YOUR TURN! Do you struggle with discipline? With being disciplined and/or keeping yourself disciplined?
RQOTD: {{new feature! Random Question Of The Day. For those who may not relate to said post(s) :-)}}
What’s one food you CAN NOT live without?
My answer? Peanut butter. I tried living without it for a while but it was death.

Hinder. What Stops You From Pushing On?

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Hebrews 12:1 NIV)

I love this verse. But it wasn’t until today during a morning devotional that I saw something new. It’s easy for the encourager to motivate and inspire others when they are on the mountaintop.
“Yes! I kicked that 5ks tail and so can you. Let me show you how!”
“Love is beautiful and a blessing. You’ll find it too!”
…and you catch my drift.
But what happens when the encourager has lost said courage? How can they press on with perseverance? What happens when their motivation is suddenly clouded and their mind becomes murky?

What entangles you?
Thoughts.
Fears.
Gossip.
Desire to be accepted.
Doubt.
Uncertainties.
Disappointments.
Failures.

The list is endless. However, we do not have to let those trials hinder us. They may give us reason to pause, but no reason to just give up.
Give your life a good long examination and be honest with yourself. What do you allow to hold you back? Then find a way to push through it.
I believe my calling in life is to lead a life of integrity and inspiration. To make my living by encouraging a healthy and full life. God has placed specific desires in my heart for a reason. Like He has also in you. And my heart is fullest when I am fulfilling that calling. Running is just one small part of it all. I want need others to see a bright light in me that doesn’t come from me. It comes by the grace of God.

Find your calling and charge on ahead. Remember, it is okay to fail or to feel completely lost at times. We all hit rough patches, but what I want you to remember is this: You are priceless. Worth it. You are more than capable. And our God is AWESOME! And He will help you finish your race.

What hinders you? How do you press through rough patches?
